Spanish private collection. The main theme in Meulener's battle paintings are - according to his life dates - episodes and scenes of the Thirty Years' War. In his style he follows his teacher Pieter Snayers, whereby, in contrast to him, he does not paint the battles in a panoramic view, i.e. in the manner of topographical-analytical battle painting, but restricts himself to the description of the fight in itself. He usually composes his cavalry skirmishes in such a way that the riders concentrate in close combat at one point in the picture.
